Conference overview

The environment drives the diversity and evolution of life, influencing genetic variation and molecular mechanisms of phenotypic plasticity. However, the significance of studying molecular impacts of environmental changes is often overlooked. The emergence of molecular toxicology for chemical risk assessment and environmental protection highlights the genetic foundations of adaptation, including environmentally responsive elements, gene-regulatory networks, and metabolic pathways, crucial for understanding biological processes across species and developmental stages. With anthropogenic factors increasingly affecting both environmental and human health, comprehending species’ molecular responses to stress becomes imperative. This conference promotes exposure perturbation studies as a dual-purpose tool for revealing basic biological functions and advancing human and environmental health. It aims to foster collaboration among experts in evolutionary biology, environmental science, (epi)genomics, toxicology, and exposomics to deepen our understanding of the molecular basis of emergent phenotypes and advocate a systems and molecular approach to studying environmental exposures.
