EMBL is an intergovernmental organisation, headquartered in Heidelberg, and was founded in 1974 with the mission of promoting molecular biology research in Europe, training young scientists, and developing new technologies.
The states in which the European Molecular Biology Laboratory is situated have concluded with the Laboratory Host Site Agreements relating to the status of the Laboratory and such privileges and immunities of the Laboratory and its staff which are necessary for the fulfillment of its objectives and for the exercise of its functions.
