It is with great sadness that we share the news of the passing of former EMBL Hamburg Group Leader Jules Hendrix, who died on 30 January 2021 at the age of 80.

Jules Hendrix remains a highlight in the history of the EMBL Hamburg Unit. He was the first to develop and implement imaging plate technology for recording synchrotron X-ray data, overcoming the tedious processing of X-ray films. The first prototype detector, the so-called ‘Red Scanner’, was a highlight instrument during the 80/90s at the EMBL Hamburg Unit, and substantially contributed to revolutionising automation in X-ray crystallography.

He will be remembered as one of the most pioneering and innovative scientists from the Hamburg Unit, and had a major impact on the Unit’s historical achievements. May he rest in peace.
