Jacques Dubochet donates Nobel medal to EMBL
“In testimony of my great thankfulness”
Jacques Dubochet, who was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2017, recently surprised EMBL in a wonderful way: he donated an official replica of his Nobel medal, which will be displayed when the EMBL Archive is inaugurated this summer. In the accompanying note, he states: “I am pleased to offer this copy of my Nobel medal to EMBL in testimony of my great thankfulness to an institution that, in my view, would deserve to be the laureate of the Prize.”
Jacques Dubochet was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2017, for his work at EMBL in the 1980s using water vitrification to prepare biological samples for electron microscopy; this process has paved the way for the revolution in cryo-electron microscopy today.
