Connecting, engaging and nurturing EMBLs global community of current and former scientists, technicians, communicators and administrators
The agenda included current and upcoming developments at EMBL Hamburg by Matthias Wilmanns, as well as activities across EMBL by Matthias Hentze. There were also presentations on specific EMBL activities involving alumni relations, the alumni volunteer programme and resource development.
Next steps were identified to commemorate Fotis Kafatos, EMBL’s 3rd Director General with an annual lecture series; and to establish an annual EMBL World Alumni Day to take place globally on the same day as EMBL Lab Day.
Key decisions made at the board meeting included the selection of the 2019 John Kendrew Award and Lennart Philipson Award recipients, Tanmay Bharat and Patrick Baeuerle respectively. The awards ceremony will take place on EMBL World Alumni Day / EMBL Lab Day in Heidelberg on Friday 19 July 2019.
The meeting included tours of PETRA III and the CSSB by Thomas Schneider and Jan Kosinski respectively, and was followed by a drinks reception with 50 EMBL Hamburg staff and alumni.
The next EMBL Alumni Association board meeting will be held at EMBL Heidelberg on Friday 19 July 2019. Highlights include the celebration of EMBL’s World Alumni Day, the Alumni Association’s 20th anniversary and the opportunity to engage with the community including EMBL’s 5th Director General, Edith Heard.
