150 alumni from 35 countries across every continent gathered online for the first Coffee with EMBL on Friday 24 April 2020.
This pilot event offered the opportunity for EMBL alumni to hear first hand how EMBL is responding to the COVID-19 pandemic, and to share some of the ways in which they’ve helped to combat the effects of the virus through research and volunteering efforts.
Coffee with EMBL provides an accessible, informal online space for members of the EMBL community to connect, share and debate, as well as giving participants access to outstanding scientists and thought leaders.
The first session was moderated by EMBL alumnus Angus Lamond, Professor, University of Dundee, and speakers included EMBL Director Matthias Hentze; Head of EMBL Barcelona James Sharpe; Interim Head of EMBL Rome Cornelius Gross; and EMBL Alumni Association Board Chair and Group Leader, Centre for Genomic Regulation Fatima Gebauer.
The next Coffee with EMBL event, on Friday 8 May, will be a continuation of the discussion around the coronavirus pandemic, with a greater focus on COVID-19 research and related activities being done by the community. There will also be the opportunity to chat with the community shortly before and after the session.
Find out what members of the EMBL community are doing to combat COVID-19 and share your story with the alumni team, or suggest speakers and topics for future Coffee with EMBLevents: alumni@embl.org.
