Connecting, engaging and nurturing EMBLs global community of current and former scientists, technicians, communicators and administrators

Michael Sela

Michael Sela, former EMBL Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC) member, passed away on 27 May 2022 at the age of 98.

It is with sadness that we share the news of the passing of distinguished immunologist Michael Sela. An EMBL SAC member from 1976-1981, Michael’s academic career spanned more than 70 years at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Rehovot, Israel, where he was President for a decade from 1975-1985. He was especially known for his research on synthetic antigens, as well as being the co-developer of the multiple sclerosis drug copaxone. Serving in various leadership roles throughout his career, Michael is remembered as a leader of science on a global scale who maintained a strong commitment to EMBO and EMBL. May he rest in peace.
