ARISE

Career Accelerator for Research Infrastructure Scientists

Professional training to become a Research Infrastructure Scientist

Goal of training

The aim of the the ARISE training programme is to train our fellows for careers in core facilities, service units, data services, and big infrastructures, in academia or industry.

All training is mapped to a competency framework developed for research infrastructure scientists.

Format of training

Training is provided in the forms of courses and secondments, both internal and external, distributed throughout their fellowship.

The courses are delivered by volunteer trainers from EMBL and external organisations.

External secondments take place with ARISE partner organisations in industry and academia.

The aims are to:

  • Collaborate on the Fellow’s project. For example, utilising new technology or data sets available at the partner organisation
  • Gain work experience in different sectors. Helping fellows decide their future career paths
  • Establishing networks and forging collaborations

Short secondment

The short secondment takes place at an ARISE partner organisation, for up to two weeks.

The aims are to:

  • Shadow other technology developers and/or service providers
  • Gain experience in the RI sector
  • Networking

Internal secondment

The internal secondment takes place within EMBL or with another ARISE group or team, for a minimum of 2 weeks.

The aims are to:

  • Understand how different service providers operate
  • Learn about different life science fields

Shadowing a user

The ‘shadowing a user’ secondment takes place with one or more EMBL services or service-providing teams, for 7 days within the first 6 months of the fellowship.

Examples might be:

  • Joining a course for the users of a computational technology
  • Shadowing a user who is using a service or facility, such as an imaging or genetics core facility

The aims are to:
