Our mission is to train scientists. This blog is a platform for us to share updates on our annual programme, tips and tricks for scientists, new e-learning opportunities, and sometimes just something to make you smile.
If you have been to VIZBI before, you know it is an unmissable event! If you have never attended, this year is your chance to get involved! VIZBI is held annually, alternating locations between Europe and the USA, and this year EMBL Heidelberg will be hosting the 13th edition!
The EMBO Workshop: Visualizing Biological Data (VIZBI 2023) takes place 28 – 31 March in EMBL Heidelberg, Germany. It features three keynote speakers as well as plenary talks from 18 leading researchers using visualisation to explore life science data.
Submit a poster
Regardless if you are joining virtually or if you are on site, everyone is encouraged to present a scientific poster and a 60-second lightning talk describing your work on biological data visualisation. This is a great opportunity to showcase your work to all the workshop attendees.
Design an artwork
Create a biologically-inspired artwork to present at the Art & Biology event. This piece of art should be visually compelling and original in communicating biological insight. Participate to win the best Art & Biology award!
Make it interactive with Schol-AR
VIZBI 2023 has a partnership with Schol-AR so you can present an augmented poster or artwork with interactive content! It’s time to get creative with videos, image stacks, 3D modules, or volumetric data. Get inspired and learn more by reading the Schol-AR paper.

Check out posters and artwork from past events.
Ahead of the on-site event, there will be a virtual pre-workshop masterclass covering advanced data visualisation methods that will help you create insightful visual representations of complex data and create visualisations for communication purposes. This is your opportunity to connect and learn from leading DataVis practitioners!
Date: 27 – 28 March
Time: 14:00 – 18:00 Berlin/Europe
Location: Virtual
Questions: masterclass@vizbi.org
For the first time, VIZBI will feature an exhibit of life science-themed apps and games using 2D, AR, and VR display technologies. You will have the opportunity to experience these technologies, learn about their applications in research and education, and meet scientists who are developing content.
Get involved by asking us to feature your work, bring headsets or other VR/AR equipment to help showcase content, help with the exhibit, and use Schol-AR to augment your poster or artwork.
Talk: Visual exploration and data analysis
Stefan’s research focuses on interactive exploratory visual analysis of large, heterogeneous datasets. His many significant contributions include novel methods for illustrative visualisation, volume rendering, smart visual interfaces, biomedical data visualisation, and visual parameter space exploration.
Stefan also has active collaborations with leading companies, and his work has been recognized with numerous awards, including the Eurographics Young Researcher Award.
Talk: Human-computer interaction
Arzu’s research interests span many fields, including information science, visual analytics, visualisation and cartography, extended reality, virtual/augmented reality, gaze-contingent displays, eye-tracking, vision (perception and cognition), and human-computer interaction. She is also involved in organising many conferences and workshops in these areas.
Arzu has given many invited talks at international scientific meetings and at outreach events, such as TEDxZurich and TEDGlobal.
Talk: Exploring nature through images
Martin is an Emmy award-winning producer of films that reveal aspects of the natural world never seen before, such as stunning bioluminescence displays. His ground-breaking films include Mara Nights, Killer Ants, Night of the Lion, and David Attenborough’s Light on Earth. His latest film ‘My Garden of a Thousand Bees‘ has won many international awards.
Join a conversation between two award-winning science communicators — biomedical animator Drew Berry and wildlife filmmaker Martin Dohrn — and watch selected screenings of their recent work! Both of them have developed pioneering methods that show aspects of the natural world never seen before.
