DNA replication and genome maintenance: from basic biology to disease

Overview

This conference will take place at EMBL Heidelberg, with the option to attend virtually.

Registration is not yet open for this event. If you are interested in receiving more information please register your interest.

Symposium overview

There has been tremendous progress in the past few years regarding our understanding of DNA replication in eukaryotes. Many important questions in the field are poised to be answered within the next decade. These include understanding DNA replication at the biochemical and protein three-dimensional structure levels, how origin firing is controlled in space and time and how DNA replication is coordinated with other processes, such as chromatin assembly, epigenome maintenance, transcription and chromosome segregation. Accurate DNA replication is important for genomic stability and several human diseases, most notably cancer, have been linked to DNA replication stress. Thus, a better understanding of how cells respond to DNA replication stress will help us understand disease development and responses to therapy. By bringing together experts in the basic biology of DNA replication and DNA replication stress, this symposium aims to fuel further progress in these important fields.

Session topics

  • Replisome structure and function
  • Replication in time and space
  • Chromatin replication and cell fate
  • Replication stress and genome stability
  • Replication-coupled DNA repair
  • Replication in development, aging, and cancer

What past participants say about the conference

I was impressed by the number of PIs who were present. Everyone working in our field in Europe showed up. The quality of work presented during talks and poster session was exceptional. There was plenty of time to talk to people which made for a terrific meeting.” — Agata Smogorzewska, The Rockefeller University, USA

The conference has helped me to keep up to date with the latest development of the field and make new contacts with various researchers. These are valuable aspects for both my professional development and scientific research.” — Ronald Wong, Institute of Molecular Biology, Germany

About

EMBO | EMBL Symposia promote scientific communication and collaboration in the European research area. They provide scientists with a platform to discuss and exchange ideas on forward-looking topics and new developments in the life sciences.

Topics emphasise upcoming developments and the interdisciplinary nature of related fields. Jointly funded and organised by EMBO and EMBL – and complementary to their respective courses, workshops, and conference programmes – the symposia promote scientific communication and collaboration.

All symposia are held in the EMBL Advanced Training Centre (ATC) in Heidelberg, Germany, or virtually.

Date: 20 - 23 Oct 2026
