Course overview

Flow cytometry is a highly effective method for analysing individual cells that has become widely used in the fields of life sciences and medicine. By utilising flow cytometry, researchers can accurately identify and measure specific cell populations within complex mixtures, as well as assess cell cycle progression, proliferation status, and expression of fluorescent markers.

Our course aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the underlying principles of flow cytometry, while also emphasising practical considerations related to the most frequently used assays. Through a combination of theoretical instruction and hands-on training, students will gain the knowledge and skills necessary to effectively design, execute, and interpret flow cytometry experiments.

Audience

The course is designed for researchers at any step of their career and will cover the subject from basic principles to complex assays. Prior basic working knowledge of flow cytometry, data acquisition or analysis software (DIVA + FlowJo)  is of advantage, but not strictly a must.

What past participants say about the course

My experience at EMBL was not only delightful but also intellectually invigorating. The seamless integration of theory and hands-on sessions provided a comprehensive learning experience. It proved to be an indispensable opportunity for exploring both fundamental and specialised aspects of flow cytometry techniques. Undoubtedly, this course was a unique and enriching chapter in my academic journey.” — Shariqa Khawaja, Aga Khan University, Pakistan

The course Hands-on Flow Cytometry was a unique experience. It gave me the possibility to meet the best specialists in the field and to ask and discuss every question I could bring up on the table. The trainers were extremely knowledgeable and kind, and it was a great pleasure to talk with each of them. The theoretical part covered from basic principles to important practical tips and tricks for the best possible experimental design. In addition, the newest cutting-edge technologies were well explained and discussed. The practical part was well suited for my needs and I could directly use the experiments and analysis we did in my everyday in the lab. I am extremely grateful that I was selected as a participant and I can only say thank you to the trainers for their patience and generosity.” — Milena Petkova, Uppsala University, Sweden
