Public Engagement & Outreach

We work with the public, partners and EMBL colleagues to enable and inspire impactful engagement with life sciences

Working in partnership

Meaningful public engagement is dependent on strong partnerships and collaboration, both with external partners and staff.

Our engagement connects the wider public with EMBL’s scientific programme and is supported by colleagues across the organisation. We collaborate with science centres, educational organisations, research institutes and community groups to develop and deliver events and activities that connect with a wide range of audiences.

We welcome new partnerships and are happy to share ideas – please get in touch.

“We truly appreciated the opportunity to be part of EMBL’s Unfold Your World project and are very happy about the collaboration.”

Take a look at some of our recent collaborations…

Stazione Zoologica Anton Dohrn, Naples, Italy, 2024

As part of the public engagement for EMBL’s Traversing European Coastlines  expedition (TREC), we partnered with SZN to offer workshops using our Run Scientist Run game, which focuses on the highs and lows of real-life research in the field. EMBL trained local volunteers from SZN to deliver these workshops in Italian.

Kulturfenster, Heidelberg, Germany, 2024

EMBL worked with youth organisation Kulturfenster to offer protein art workshops as part of the Unfold Your World project in 2024. Several participants created an artwork for the project, which aimed to ignite teenagers’ curiosity about proteins. Working in partnership with Kulturfenster enabled us to reach this audience more effectively.

Suffolk Family Carers programme, Hinxton, UK, 2024

EMBL-EBI has a long-standing partnership with the Suffolk Family Carers programme, a charity that supports young carers. Storytelling and creativity are key to this collaboration. Themes and activities are agreed in partnership – such as the Science Spooktacular, a Halloween-themed event with hands-on activities including glow-in-the-dark experiments and slime-making, which was especially popular.

Cosmocité, Grenoble, France, 2024

As part of the Parvis des Science programme, EMBL Grenoble worked with Cosmocité science centre to offer workshops using our Nexus Island resource, which focuses on coastline ecology. EMBL trained local volunteers from Cosmocité to deliver the workshops in French. The resource now remains with the institute, enabling ongoing outreach.
