Enabling external scientists and students to benefit from new collaborations, technologies and state-of-the-art equipment
Scientists at different career levels are welcome to visit EMBL. There is no specific deadline for applications nor a determined timeframe for visits. Duration and timeline are organised based on a mutual agreement with the host.
An undergraduate student from a university or professional school wanting to perform practical work by doing an internship. Undergraduate students may obtain a limited participation towards housing and subsistence upon discretion of the hosting group or team leader. Trainees must be at least 18 years old to be eligible for training at EMBL. The total stay may not exceed 12 months.
An undergraduate student from a university or professional school wanting to perform practical work in order to establish their master thesis (or equivalent) in collaboration with the laboratory. Undergraduate students may obtain a limited participation towards housing and subsistence upon discretion of the hosting group leader. The total stay may not exceed 12 months.
A graduate visitor who finished their Master’s or Bachelor programme and is no longer enrolled at University.
A PhD student is registered with an external institution for their PhD thesis and not part of the EMBL International PhD Programme. The student wishes to benefit from EMBL technologies and methods for specific parts of their thesis.
Visits of more than 6 months need prior approval of the Dean of Graduate Studies. The maximum total training period at EMBL, including any extensions, must be less than half of the entire PhD period.

The EMBL International PhD Programme invites applications from all highly qualified candidates. The selection process must safeguard the excellence of the programme and its international, inclusive character. The selection process must be transparent, objective and offer balanced chances to all applicants.
Candidates who have previously been associated with EMBL are welcome to apply. To ensure equal treatment of all applicants to the EIPP, candidates with prior EMBL association will be specifically reviewed by the Graduate Committee.
A postdoctoral fellow with a contract at a different home institute visiting EMBL for a short-term project.
External staff scientist holding a PhD and working above postdoctoral level.
All technical assistants and other technical experts (e.g. scientific IT experts).
Faculty at research institutions coming to EMBL for scientific purposes to pursue collaboration with EMBL staff.
The EMBL Scientific Visitor Programme invites scientists interested in visiting EMBL to directly contact the group leader or head of Core Facility they would like to collaborate with, including a letter of motivation describing the research topic and a detailed CV, to discuss the possibility of a visit.
Once a group leader or head of Core Facility accepts a visitor, the EMBL Scientific Visitor Programme will be notified and will be happy to provide scientists with logistical support to help make their stay at EMBL the most productive experience.
