EMBL typically welcomes a significant number of scientific visitors to all its sites from trainees to principal investigators (PIs) on a sabbatical (please see our Annual reports for numbers).
Individual travel costs should not exceed the following limits:
The costs of the researcher’s travel to EMBL will be covered by EMBL at a rate not exceeding that of the most economic, reasonable and rational means of transport.
EMBL has access to a variety of accommodation at many of its sites. A summary of this information is available at the following links.
If there is no availability or suitable option found within these locations, the visitor is asked to find their suitable accommodation options. Relevant advice through experience of past visitors can be provided by the respective site administrative contact.
There are several bi-lingual and international schools located in and around the Heidelberg and Mannheim area. The following links are some examples. Any news we receive about information events are also posted on this webpage. If you find any information which could be added to this webpage, please contact the SA office.
All classes are taught in English and German is taught as a subject in all grades and at all levels of ability. Visits to the school can be arranged on an individual basis. Note that the school calendar year is not the same as German schools. The school year begins at the end of August and ends at the end of June. The offices are open during the summer. They recommend that visits are made when the students are there.
All EMBL staff have a 50% discount on the tuition fees and are able to pay the fees on a monthly basis. The entrance fee is also reduced by 50% (due before the first day of school). There is no discount on the administration fee (395 Euros in 2020) or technology fee (300 Euros in 2020 for grades 8-12).

The DAI is opening a new bilingual international school in Heidelberg in September 2021. Initially it is intended for grades 1–10 consisting of 2 classes, offering 40 spaces; these will be mixed-age classes starting with grades 1-2 and 5-6. They will add additional classes each year. The work with the state curriculum of Baden Württemberg and the Cambridge Curriculum.

This is a German-French private school which belongs to the French school system (AEFE – Agence pour l’Enseignment Francais à l’Étranger) as well as being a German school recognised by the German state. There is a school and a childcare centre. The aim is to prepare students by developing their skills in French as well as in German.

EMBL’s Human Resources (HR) team is able to support visitors in obtaining the appropriate visa documentation to facilitate their travel and stay at the respective EMBL site, in collaboration with the respective site administrative contact. Once a visit is confirmed, the HR team or the Unit Administrator will contact the visitor to assist with the visa application procedure. All visitors from Third countries are advised to schedule a visit well in advance to allow sufficient time for visa-related procedures. Visa costs are at the visitor’s expense.
