EditUsing the power of molecular biology for a healthy planet
Climate change and biodiversity loss are among the major threats to our planet. Yet now more than ever, we at EMBL have the research tools and know-how to study ecosystems in their natural context while addressing the pressing environmental challenges our society faces.
The life sciences – the study of living organisms – have enormous and still largely unexplored potential to drive innovative solutions for our planet.
However, this cannot be done in the laboratory alone.
Environmental expedition “on wheels”
This is why EMBL and its partners will embark on a one-of-a-kind research expedition to pioneer the use of mobile laboratories to understand how ecosystems are impacted by different environmental factors, such as pollution, loss of biodiversity, and climate change. Mobile truck laboratories will bring state-of-the-art technologies to over 100 locations along the coast in 24 European countries, where scientists will collect samples and analyze them directly on site. For the first time, TREC researchers will analyze ecosystems at the smallest molecular level in their natural environment.
Our researchers can only find solutions to pressing global environmental challenges if we understand what our ecosystems are composed of.
Research alone cannot save our environment. This requires every single citizen.
That is why the TREC partners invite the local population to come on board at individual stops. The expedition team will explain to school children, adults and politicians how the researchers use the samples to examine the state of health of the respective location and how to best protect the environment.
