The Library was opened on the 20th November 1979 and it is named after the Hungarian-American scientist Leo Szilárd, who in part initiated the idea of EMBL.

The Szilárd Library will reopen six workplaces in the reading room on Thursday 08 July 2021. The workplaces have to be booked via the room booking system. Please inform yourself about the currently valid hygiene measures before you visit the library. We are looking forward to welcome you again.
On 1 July, the Szilard Library switches to a new library system and a new library catalogue. The new catalogue will be available at the same URL as the old one.
