DEAL Agreement

Projekt DEAL enables scientists at all EMBL sites to publish Open Access for free (in hybrid/open choice journals) or with 20% discount (in full Open Access journals) and grants access to almost the entire journal portfolio of Wiley and Springer Nature. EMBL has joined the two successfully negotiated DEAL agreements with Wiley and Springer Nature. Projekt DEAL is an initiative of the Alliance of German Science Organizations to negotiate nationwide transformative “publish and read” agreements with the largest commercial publishers of scholarly journals on behalf of all German academic institutions including universities, universities of applied sciences, research institutions, state and regional libraries. Although DEAL is a national project in Germany, EMBL is eligible to participate with all its sites.

What is the DEAL agreement?

The DEAL agreements are Read & Publish licensing agreements concluded between the Alliance of German Science Organizations and Wiley and Springer Nature. It offers participating institutions access to the publisher’s full eJournal portfolio (1600 titles in a range of disciplines) while supporting and facilitating Open Access publishing.

The Wiley agreement is valid for the period 2019 – 2021 with the option to renew for one further year (2022). The Springer Nature agreement is valid for the period 2020 – 2022 with the option to renew for one further year (2023). The DEAL agreements are transformative agreements compliant with Plan S principles.

What does it mean for you?

The agreement offers to EMBL’s affiliating authors at all sites a number of benefits:

Wiley

  • Perpetual access to the entire portfolio of electronic journals published by Wiley, including full backfiles from 1997 forward.

  • 20% reduction in APCs for papers submitted in fully/gold OA journals. The remaining costs are covered by the central APC budget or, if applicable, by a grant.
  • Automatic submission of your paper to EuropePMC, thus ensuring full compliance to IP66/Open Access publication policy.
  • The complete and continuously updated journal title list covered by the DEAL-Wiley agreement can be found on Wiley – DEAL Consortia page.
