Formerly known as European Learning Laboratory for the Life Sciences
Our inspiring educational experiences share the scientific discoveries of EMBL with young learners aged 10-19 years and teachers in Europe and beyond. We belong to EMBL’s Science Education and Public Engagement office.
This week the team of EMBL’s European Learning Laboratory for the Life Sciences (ELLS) will be presenting practical workshops and interactives at the Science Days 2015 in Rust, near Freiburg (Germany). From 22 October to 24 October 2015 the Science Days – one of Germany’s largest science festivals – is expected to attract again +20.000 visitors. School students, teachers and families – the Science Days will provide plenty of opportunity for everyone to participate in hands-on experiments centering around this year’s main theme “Faszination Licht” (“Fascination Light”). ELLS has devised a variety of brand-new interactive demos and practical activities to showcase how EMBL scientists are using a broad range of the electromagnetic spectrum to learn about the basics of life. ELLS’ umbrella theme “Mit Licht vom Leben lernen” (“Using light to learn about life”) will allow the stand visitors to fold fully functional microscopes from a sheet of paper and to use them directly for investigation of a variety of microbes living in a drop of “hay infusion”. Sounds incredible? Pass by and try it out yourself! In addition, the stand visitors will explore how researchers are using fluorescent proteins to follow proteins in cells and developing organisms and how structural biology contributes to our knowledge of subcellular structures and biomolecules. Measuring genomes with roller shutter belts, peaking into the ELLS BlackBox and finding out about blue bananas…these are just some of the exciting activities that you will find at EMBL’s stand A3 in the Europapark Foyer. The event on Saturday 24 October will be open to families (without prior registration) and we are looking forward to seeing you around at the Science Days 2015!
