“Imaging life – How modern microscopes revolutionise biology”

The EMBL Insight Lecture 2024 will be presented by Dr. Robert Prevedel, Group Leader at EMBL Heidelberg, on 13 December 2024, 10:30-11:45 CET.

Our world is made up of many things that are so small that they are invisible to the naked eye – now imagine being able to see them. That is what light microscopy allows us to do, and it has completely revolutionised the field of biology. Since they were first developed, light microscopes have come a long way: Today, they give us incredibly detailed insights into cellular and molecular structures that make up the organisation and function of individual cells, tissues and entire organisms. They even allow us to watch complex processes, such as a cell dividing for the first time, in real time and at an amazing resolution.

Light microscopes have already greatly expanded our knowledge of biology, but there is still more to discover. In the EMBL Insight Lecture 2024, Dr. Robert Prevedel will explain the basic principles and recent advances in light microscopy. Using examples from his team’s research, Robert will also show how they are developing new generations of light microscopes to continue pushing the limits of microscopy and thereby what we can see and understand in biology.
