Overview

The application and development of molecular biology techniques are essential for new discoveries in the life sciences. The self-paced course “Molecular Biology Techniques: Comprehensive Approaches for Educators and Enthusiasts“, organised by EMBL’s Science Education and Public Engagement team in partnership with Merck, provides an insight into the key molecular biology techniques used in modern research and explores their effective teaching methods in the classroom.

This free online course will run from 21 October to 1 December 2024. Participants can join at any time and progress through the course material at their convenience. No live or Q&A sessions are intended. Upon completion, participants can earn a certificate of attendance by completing a short feedback questionnaire.

Please note: This course reuses content from the 2021 EMBL virtual LearningLAB “Taking a Fresh Look: Teaching Molecular Biology Techniques in the Classroom“.  In addition to the previous content, pre-recorded Zoom scientific discussions and new learning and teaching resources have been added.

Who is this course for?
This course is designed for formal and informal educators, including teacher trainers and educators in training. It is also suitable for science professionals and anyone interested in learning more about molecular biology techniques.

Learning format

The course content will be available online from 21 October to 1 December 2024 and is divided into two sections tailored to your level of understanding and interest.

  1. Explore section (Science section) includes a two-part pre-recorded lecture on the protein production workflow, a recorded Zoom Q&A session with the speaker, a video lab tour and an additional collection of scientific resources.
  2. Teach section offers an EMBL computer-based teaching resource, a recorded Zoom demonstration of how to use it, and an additional collection of teaching resources.

The course workload is designed around ‘recommended‘ content, including pre-recorded lectures and pedagogical materials. The time commitment may vary depending on your interests and engagement with the materials. No live or Q&A sessions are intended throughout this course.

  • Expand your understanding of the key molecular biology techniques used in current life science research
  • Appreciate the application of these techniques in basic research and beyond
  • Enhance your secondary school teaching with comprehensive materials on molecular biology techniques.

Once you submit the form, a course link will become available and sent to your inbox.

If you’re already an eCampus user, the course link will take you directly to the course, where you can enrol.

If you’re not yet registered on eCampus, please review the EMBL GDPR and follow the steps to create a new account. After your account is set up, go to the eCampus Home tab, where the Molecular Biology Techniques 2024 course will be listed at the top.

You can then enter the course from there and explore the content at your own pace until 1 December 2024 at midnight.
