The Chief Operating Officer is responsible for ensuring the operational effectiveness of EMBL. Reporting directly to the Director General, the COO is a key member of EMBL’s senior leadership and plays a major role in supporting the delivery of science by ensuring the operational needs of the research community are met.
The Chief Operating Officer is directly responsible to the Director General for providing administrative and operational services to all members of personnel of the organisation at all six EMBL sites. The Chief Operating Officer collaborates with senior management and other members of the Laboratory, EMBL's governing Council, national and local authorities in the host countries of the EMBL sites, and the Laboratory's Staff Association.
The Chief Operating Officer also has close relationships with the EMBL Council, and in particular the Finance Committee, which decide the Laboratory’s general policies, budgets, and terms and conditions of service.
The Chief Operating Officer is supported by the EMBL Administration Units Facility Management, Finance, Health and Safety, Human Resources, Legal Services, Purchase, general support services as well as the Environmental Office, the Equality, Diversity & Inclusion Office and the Administration of all EMBL sites. The Chief Operating Officer's team includes the Deputy Chief Operating Officer (DCOO) and the Operations Management Team (OMT).
