Mikhail Savitski wins HUPO Discovery in Proteomic Sciences Award

The award recognises the team leader's work on developing Thermal Proteome Profiling (TPP), an unbiased proteomics approach for identifying protein targets of drugs and phenotyping cellular states.

Mikhail Savitski, EMBL Heidelberg Team Leader and Head of Proteomics Core Facility, has received the 2024 HUPO Discovery in Proteomic Sciences Award. 

The Human Proteome Organization (HUPO) was established in 2001 and promotes the development and application of proteomics technologies for enhancement of biological knowledge, global health, and wellness. Its Discovery in Proteomics Sciences Award recognises a scientist each year for an outstanding discovery in the field of proteomics.

Savitski, whose team creates mass spectrometry-based methods to systematically profile protein biophysical properties, received this award for developing Thermal Proteome Profiling (TPP). TPP allows researchers to identify protein targets of drugs by measuring the thermal stability of proteins in living cells. In addition to drug target discovery, the method can also be applied to the study of interactions between proteins and other biomolecules, such as nucleic acids, metabolites, or other proteins. Recently, the team has successfully used this method to answer a range of biological questions, including the study of eukaryotic cell cycle, bacterial infection processes, and more.

“I am incredibly honoured and humbled to receive this award recognizing our work on thermal stability proteomics from the Human Proteome Organization. This work would have been impossible without the contribution of many people over the years and I would like to thank all of them,” said Savitski.
