Alba Diz-Muñoz recognised with two prestigious awards

EMBL Heidelberg Group Leader selected as Allen Distinguished Investigator and awarded the BINDER Innovation Prize 2024

Alba Diz-Muñoz, EMBL Heidelberg Group Leader in Cell Biology and Biophysics, has recently been selected as an Allen Distinguished Investigator, honouring her achievements and enabling further work in the fields of cell biology and biomechanics.

The Allen Distinguished Investigator (ADI) programme was established in 2010 to support early-stage research with the potential to reinvent entire fields. It aims to further ambitious research that traditional research funding programmes would likely not support. In the last 12 years, the programme has funded 130 ADIs.

“I’m very honoured to have received the ADI Award and delighted to have the chance to work with my good friend Carsten Schultz, who led an EMBL group and showed me the ropes when I started!” said Diz-Muñoz. “The ADI is giving us a great opportunity to embark on an ambitious, interdisciplinary methods development project. It’s not so easy to get funding for this type of work, but it is key for pushing forward the frontiers of scientific investigation. This award will allow us to develop a comprehensive lipid toolbox that will finally enable the biophysics community to explore the importance of membrane viscosity in cellular processes.”

The German Society for Cell Biology also recently awarded Diz-Muñoz the 2024 BINDER Innovation Prize. BINDER GmbH in Tuttlingen sponsors this award that is bestowed annually for outstanding contributions to cell biology.
