EMBL has received the Lab Programs and Initiatives Award from the International Institute for Sustainable Laboratories (I2SL).

The I2SL Sustainable Laboratories Awards Programme distinguishes exceptional projects, programmes, and individuals demonstrating innovative and exemplary accomplishments in sustainability, energy efficiency, decarbonisation, and waste reduction in laboratories. The competition celebrates leadership and innovation, drawing on I2SL’s reputation as the foremost organisation for sustainable, safe, and efficient laboratories.

EMBL is the overall winner in the category ‘Lab Programs and Initiatives’, which highlights individuals, programmes, and initiatives within laboratories that advance sustainability. The award highlights several of EMBL’s achievements, which include reducing our carbon footprint, reducing waste in laboratories, encouraging behavioural change among scientists, lowering electricity consumption in data services, and helping to set up the Sustainable European Laboratories Network to promote and share knowledge on sustainable lab practices.

Brendan Rouse, EMBL Head of Sustainability said: “We are honoured to win this award, which recognises the vast array of activities and achievements which EMBL’s staff have achieved in the years since we launched our sustainability strategy – it is great to know that our programme is at the forefront of the sustainable science movement. Our staff have been so supportive of Green EMBL, and I hope this recognition from I2SL reassures them that their efforts are worthwhile. We still have a long way to go to achieve our goals and I hope that this award will give us renewed impetus to keep making EMBL more sustainable and help us to further promote sustainable science across our networks and beyond.”
