Flora Vincent, Group Leader in the Developmental Biology Unit at EMBL Heidelberg, has received the Alliance of World Scientists’ (AWS) Planet Earth Award 2025, which acknowledges individuals who champion life on Earth.

The AWS provides a collective international voice for more than 26,000 scientists across 180 countries, regarding the global climate crisis and environmental trends with the intent to turn accumulated knowledge into action. Every year, the AWS nominates scientists whose work impacts the world (local or globally) to receive the Planet Earth Award.

Vincent, who investigates microbial interactions in the ocean and their role in climate regulation, is one of five awardees in 2025. “Dr. Flora Vincent’s leadership in marine microbiology has been transformative, bridging molecular science and ecological research to reveal the critical role of microbial interactions in ocean health,” said William J. Ripple, Professor and Director of the Alliance of World Scientists. “Her work is essential in shaping our understanding of how marine ecosystems respond to climate change.”

In addition to leading international research, she helped coordinate the recent pan-European TREC Expedition and actively participates in public engagement initiatives, bridging science and education to inspire future generations.
