Jorge Lázaro and Miki Ebisuya receive the GSCN Publication of the Year 2024 award

The EMBL Barcelona researchers' work on the stem cell zoo uncovers intracellular scaling of developmental tempo across mammals.

Jorge Lázaro, PhD student at the Ebisuya Group, and Miki Ebisuya, Group Leader at EMBL Barcelona and PoL, received the Publication of the Year 2024 award by the German Stem Cell Network for their work published in the journal Cell Stem Cell. The Group used an unprecedented stem cell zoo to compare six different mammalian species and their developmental times.

Every year, the German Stem Cell Network recognises the best publication of German origin in the field of stem cell research. Currently, Miki Ebisuya and her group hold double affiliation, both at EMBL Barcelona and at the Cluster of Excellence Physics of Life (PoL), TU Dresden.

“We are honoured to receive the GSCN Publication of the Year Award 2024 from the German Stem Cell Network.” said Lázaro. “I hope that the recognition of the stem cell zoo sparks further comparative studies across species.”

The Ebisuya group recapitulates developmental mechanisms in vitro to study how we humans are different from other species and develops novel tools to manipulate tissue shape and function.

The award includes a presentation by the first author of the publication in the Presidential Symposium at the GSCN Conference in Jena, Germany, on Thursday 26 September 2024.

“The stem cell zoo approach was made possible by the invaluable contributions of our collaborators and biobanks, who established and provided the animal stem cell lines,” said Ebisuya. “I’m delighted that our collective effort has been recognized by the German Stem Cell Network.”
